INTRODUCTION

Lifting and handling of objects is the No. 1 cause of injuries in most workplaces. Employers must provide safety training for their employees suitable to the nature of the work involved. This course is tailored to the specific requirements of that workplace. To comply with Health and Safety legislation, and increasingly the requirements of Insurance companies, employers should run this course.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the session the participant will be able to:

1. Define manual handling and list the chief requirements under the 1993 Manual Handling regulations.

2. Briefly describe the anatomy and physiology of the back.

3. State the steps necessary to maintain personal fitness and flexibility.

4. Describe various injuries, which can be sustained through incorrect lifting techniques.

5. List the eight steps for carrying out a safe lifting operation in different situations.

6. Demonstrate the five basic manual handling tasks.

7. Identify unsafe manual handling situations.

DURATION: Four hours
